Robert F. Murphy – of Braintree ascended to eternal rest on July 2, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family. Bob was born August 15, 1932, grew up in Dorchester, graduated from Dorchester High, and summered on Gunrock Beach, Hull, MA. He served in the Army in Japan during the Korean War. He was a graduate of Northeastern University and then began his life-long career at mutual fund company Colonial Management.
He married the love of his life Phyllis (Budrick) Murphy of Quincy on November 3, 1956. They settled in Braintree, where they raised their six children, joined St. Clare’s Church, and enjoyed the company of many lifelong friends for 65 years. Dad volunteered at St. Clare’s, as a Lecture, and at South Shore Hospital for many years.
Bob and Phyllis enjoyed travelling the world, especially with their friends Anne and the late Richard Musmeci. Bob and Phyllis not only visited many of the states, they also traveled to Canada, Ireland, Bermuda, St. John’s, Caribbean, Italy, France, Germany, Turkey, Greece, sat by the Trevino fountain in Rome, and especially loved the Netherlands, during the tulip festival.
Dad enjoyed gardening, swimming, skiing, working out at the Weymouth Club, watching all Boston sports teams, and many summer vacations on Cape Cod, boating around in his Boston Whaler.
Cherished father of Stephen Murphy, and his wife Deborah of Braintree, Robert Murphy Jr., and his wife Jayne of Quincy, Garrett Murphy of Los Angeles, CA, Lawrence Murphy of Portland, OR, Thomas Murphy, and his wife Jitta of Fort Collins, CO, and Patricia Murphy, of Norwell, MA. He is predeceased by his siblings Francis, Adelaide, Walter, Rosemarie, Garrett, Beatrice, and Doris.
Dear Grandfather to Kelly Sankar and her husband Dominic, of Mohegan Lake, NY, Danielle Hall and her husband Patrick, of Newburyport, Kerri Chambers and her husband Kyle, of Braintree, Stephen Murphy, of Hull, Robert Murphy, III and his fiancé Vanessa, of Attleboro, Christopher Murphy, of Norwell, and Jason Murphy, of Fort Collins, Colorado. Bob is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and friends that will miss him dearly.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on July 11, 2023, from 4-7 PM at McMaster Funeral Home 86 Franklin Street. (Rt. 37), Braintree. A funeral Mass will be held on July 12, 2023, at 10:00am at the Church of Saint Clare, 1244 Liberty Street., Braintree. Interment Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
