Robert R. Monaghan, Jr. Obituary
Robert Ross Monaghan, Jr age 71 of West Bridgewater, MA, formerly of Braintree, MA, passed away suddenly and peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday March 2, 2025.
Bob was a loving son, father, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend. He was predeceased by his mother June F (Holbrook) Monaghan, father Robert R Monaghan, Sr, Stepmother Shirley Monaghan Burrows, and sister Carole (Monaghan) Canwell.
He is survived by his son, Robert R Monaghan, III, of Quincy, his brother Wayne F Monaghan, of Hingham, sister Lynn Monaghan Zopatti, of West Bridgewater whom he has lived with for 21 years. Nieces Jean Payne, June Canwell, Jessica McDonald, and Jacquelyn Coveney. Nephews John Canwell, Jeff Canwell, John Hall, 14 grand nieces and nephews, all who he cherished, and 2 stepsisters Sheila M Brown of Fl and Lorraine J Chapman of Rockland.
Bob had a wealth of knowledge, skill and talent. He was a master machinist, auto & marine mechanic, welder, wood turner, commercial fisherman, jack of all trades and a collector of everything you could ever need.
He still worked a full time job at South Shore Bearing in Quincy as a machinist. He held many positions over the years, including being a stern man for his brother Wayne on the commercial lobster boats, No Rush, Leighward, Quohog and Sea Level out of Hingham. He was an engineer on the commercial deep sea fishing vessel the Shanty Girl out of New Bedford and would be out to sea for 10 or more days at a time. He was a marine mechanic at Power Products in St Thomas, VI. He was a fuel system mechanic for Swissport at Logan International Airport in Boston. He was an auto mechanic at Herb Chambers Ford in Braintree. He was a machinist at Russard Precision Machine in Rockland. He learned about tools and working on cars and trucks at a very young age from his Uncle, Earl Holbrook. He could be found skipping school and hanging out at Jigsy’s Gas Station Garage in South Braintree. One of his earliest jobs was at Perry Trucking in Braintree. He also spent many years renting his own shops and often times living upstairs where he made himself available 24/7 for family and friends, in Braintree on Brookside Rd, Brockton on Sterling St, Chief’s Auto in Hanover, and the last 21 years in Rockland on Industrial Dr. He has worked alongside Dave McKean and Paul aka Clutch, at Collins Heating & Cooling.
Bob was a proud member of the South Shore Woodturners and Boston Lobsterman Association. His hobbies included crafting wood into pens, bowls, toy tops and trinkets, collecting vices and anvils and many other things.
If you were lucky enough to know Bob, you were blessed. He was the gentlest, kindest and most generous man. He had a passion for so many things and gave 100% all the time. He was a teacher of his many skills to anyone willing to listen and learn. He was an open book with an open heart who really enjoyed talking, listening and reminiscing. The world is a better place for having him in it. He was taken much too soon and will be greatly missed by so many.
Funeral arrangements for immediate family and close friends will be private at South Congregational Church in Braintree, with a later Celebration of Life at Braintree/Weymouth Elks (formerly the DAV) 788 Liberty St, Braintree on Saturday, April 26, 2025, 1pm-5pm.
