He was born in Ticonderoga, N.Y., in 1947, raised in Hull, Mass., and lived with his family in Braintree for 47 years. He was the son of the late Leon and Jeanne (Harris) Kelly. Richard graduated from Northeastern University, then served as an aviation navigator for the U.S. Navy. Following an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1971, he attended and graduated from Suffolk University School of Law. He began his career at the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, later moving to the office of the Massachusetts Attorney General, where he specialized in white collar investigations. Richard was happiest when he was coaching kids, starting with his four children when they were very young. He started the AAU basketball franchise the Bay State Magic in the early 1990’s, and helped it to grow into one of the largest and most successful programs in the state. Richard was the beloved husband of Sally (Moynihan) Kelly, adored father of Erin K. Holloway and her husband Kurt of Duxbury, Christopher W. Kelly and his wife Kristyn of Braintree, Brian M. Kelly of Duxbury, and Elizabeth M. Kelly and her wife Kara of Braintree. He is the cherished Papa of Daniel, Emma, and Jacob Kelly; Madison, Avery, and Camryn Holloway; and Kinsey Kelly. Dear brother of Doris K. Nelson and her husband Keith of Braintree; Michael L. Kelly and his wife Susan, and the uncle to their children Sara, Bridget, and Sean, all of Braintree.
