Michael S Herman Obituary

Michael Stephen Herman Sr., a lifelong resident of Braintree, MA, passed away peacefully at home after a short illness, surrounded by his family.

Born in Braintree to Robert Herman and Mary Cook, Michael grew up deeply connected to his hometown. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joni Harrison, and his son Michael Herman Jr. He is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Herman; his beloved daughter, Julie Little; her husband, James Little; his grandchildren, James and Siena; and his special aunt, Jean Monohan.

Michael graduated from Blue Hills Regional Technical School and proudly considered himself a graduate of “the school of hard knocks.” He began his career as a draftsman before starting his own contracting business, helping shape the Boston skyline through his work on high-rise buildings. His talent, determination, and strong work ethic were evident in everything he did.

The ocean was woven into every part of Michael’s life. As a Junior Member at the Town River Yacht Club in Quincy, he discovered a love of boating, fishing, and being on the water. The club is where he met his wife, raised his children among friends who felt like family, and spent countless hours hauling boats, telling stories, and helping anyone who needed a hand. His passion for fishing became a family tradition he passed down through generations.

Michael embraced life with joy and curiosity. He loved cars — especially his Ford Lightning — traveling with his wife, exploring new places, and returning to his favorites, from Italy to annual summer trips on Martha’s Vineyard. In later years, nothing meant more to him than time by the ocean with his grandchildren, teaching them to fish, catch crabs, and enjoy the water as much as he did. He stayed active at the gym, enjoyed cooking for loved ones, and shared many good conversations and glasses of wine with his daughter. He never missed his grandson’s sporting events and cherished sitting with his granddaughter, playing and sharing snacks.

Michael will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and unmistakable presence. He greeted everyone with a bright smile and a loud hello, often wearing his signature orange tee or tank top. Hardworking, loyal, and full of heart, he made others feel welcome and cared for. To know Michael was truly to be loved by him.
