Lucy A. Hession Obituary
Lucy A. (Melino) Hession, 95, of Norwood and Braintree MA, passed peacefully on September 8. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Lucy was the daughter of Angelina (Lorusso) and Angelo Melino of Norwood. She was born in Boston's North End on September 14, 1928. Lucy had a beautiful, engaging smile and bright eyes that showed her kindness and humor. After graduating from Norwood High School in 1946, she attended Bryant & Stratton in Boston. As a young woman, Lucy worked for The Liberty Mutual Insurance Company in Boston. She married William Aloysius Hession. They moved to Braintree and had six children, Michael John and his wife Robin, Anne Marie Medeiros, Noreen and her husband Mark Whitworth, William Paul, Mary Ellen and her partner Gary Bogue, and Judith; nine grandchildren, Michael Johnson Hession, Christopher Mark Hession, Jenna Jon Stephens, Daniel William Medeiros, Richard William Hession, Alexander Paul Hession, Nicholas James Hession, Jennifer Dwyer, and Samuel David Friedman; and, eight great-grandchildren, Michael Hession, Matthew Hession, Caleb Hession, Samantha Stephens, Sloane Stephens, Lucy Mae Hession, Reese Hession, and Kinslee Hession; and many loved godchildren, nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her husband William, her daughter Anne Maire, her brother Michael Melino and sister Josephine (Melino) McMullin.
Lucy was an extraordinary woman. After most of her children were grown, Lucy went back to accomplish a life-long dream of attending college, and graduated from Catherine Laboure School of Nursing in 1977, at the age of 49. She worked as a diet-technician and particularly loved working for the Hebrew Rehabilitation Center. In yet another chapter of her life, she decided to work at the Braintree Town Hall, where she stayed until she retired.
Lucy was a founding and 50-plus year member of St. Francis of Assisi's Catholic Daughters. She loved volunteering, including working as a vote counter in Braintree elections for decades and then, having moved to St. Petersburg, FL, after retirement, as a volunteer at the local V.A. Hospital.
Lucy loved to dance. She and Bill would clear the floor at the Knights of Columbus dances when a fox-trot came on. She danced several nights a week into her late seventies. She also had a love of traveling that began with a solo trip to Washington DC at the age of nineteen, and later led her to Ireland, Italy, the Ber, as well as travels in the US and Canada.
Most of all, Lucy was an incredible mother. She raised six devoted children who never wanted for a thing, and who could not have loved her any more.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Thursday, September 12, from 10:30am-12:30pm at McMaster Funeral Home, 86 Franklin St., Braintree.
