Obituary

John B. Nelson of Braintree passed away after a long illness on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at the age of 80.

Son of the late Karl V. and Helen (Bain) Nelson.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Virginia (Hawes) Nelson of Braintree.  Loving father of John Nelson of Braintree, Sheryl Nelson of Bridgewater, and Richard Nelson and his wife, Jillian, of Weymouth.  Loving brother to Joan Bubier of Mattapoisett and her husband, the late Fred Bubier, and Karen Moore and her husband, Gilbert Moore, of Tennessee.  Loving brother-in-law to Richard K. Hawes, and his wife, Margaret, of Weymouth.  Devoted grandfather (Papa) to Rilley Lydon of West Virginia, Kasey Lydon of Raynham, Erin Lydon of Bridgewater, Owen Lydon of Bridgewater and great-grandfather to Liam Graham of West Virginia. Loving uncle to several nieces and nephews.

John grew up in Quincy, MA, and graduated from Quincy High School.  He attended Wentworth Institute of Technology and earned certification as a Tool and Die Maker. He worked in this trade for more than 35 years. When his children were young, John could be found on the soccer fields coaching teams. John was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan. You could always find him in the living room watching many competitive games. John also had a passion for listening to and recording country music.  As he got older, watching westerns on TV became a favorite pastime. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Private services will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, a donation in John’s memory may be made to a favorite charity of your choice.
