James “Jimmy” Tracey passed away peacefully in the presence of his family after a life marked by service, learning, faith, and an unwavering intellectual curiosity.

To say Jimmy was well read would be a dramatic understatement. He somehow managed to accumulate degrees, certifications, languages, and areas of expertise faster than most people collect hobbies. 

A master of trivia long before Google existed, Jimmy possessed the rare ability to answer questions nobody else knew to ask. He was, by all family accounts, undefeated at Trivial Pursuit. While official records are difficult to verify, no credible evidence has ever surfaced suggesting otherwise.  

Jimmy attended BC  High in the famous class of 1952 before graduating with honors from the Harvard Class of 1956. Following his education, he proudly served in the United States Army as a military police officer.

Jimmy’s professional career reflected both his intelligence and adventurous spirit. He worked for some of America’s most respected technology and aerospace companies during periods of tremendous innovation and growth. He began his career with Intel and later joined IBM in San Jose, helping shape the future of computing in what would eventually become Silicon Valley back when engineers still outnumbered influencers and long before anyone had heard of Zuckerberg or Musk. One of his favorite jobs was as a Project manager at Boeing on the 767 program. 

No matter where his career, education, or adventures took him, Boston was always home. Jimmy carried the city with him wherever he went, the grit of Dorchester, the pride of BC High School, the passion of a Red Sox fan, and the unmistakable character that defines a true Bostonian. Though he lived and worked across the country, his heart never left Boston, and he always found his way back to the city he loved. 

A lifelong student, Jimmy believed education was a pursuit without an endpoint. He earned an MBA from Northeastern , a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, and later attended law school at the University of California, Berkeley. He spoke multiple languages and never seemed to meet a subject he wasn’t willing to learn more about. 

While his accomplishments were many, Jimmy’s faith was the foundation of his life. A devoted Catholic, he leaned heavily on his faith through both triumphs and challenges. His belief in God provided him strength, comfort, and guidance throughout his life, and it remained an important source of peace during his final days. 

Late in life, Jimmy discovered a deep love for dogs, especially his beloved Springer Spaniel, Buddy. The two became inseparable companions, spending countless hours and countless miles together wandering the neighborhoods of Braintree. Over the years they became something of a local institution, managing to charm a handful of neighbors, irritate a much larger number, and maintain what can only be described as a professional relationship with the local dog catcher.

A lifelong Red Sox fan, Jimmy followed the team with equal measures of passion, loyalty, hope, and occasional disbelief. While he celebrated the championships, he remained convinced that Red Sox ownership could benefit from a few strongly worded suggestions from the fans. In typical Jimmy fashion, he was always prepared to explain exactly how he would run the organization better himself. They weren't his final words, but they were close "SELL THE TEAM! " And for all the sport wagerers out there, he's shared with  us the Patriots will win the Super Bowl this year! 

Jimmy is survived by his sister, Carol, and her husband, Paul G. Katsirubas, of Crystal River, Florida; his nephews, Paul, Stephen, and Gregory; his grand-nephews, Patrick and Alexander; his grand-nieces, Jacqueline, Olivia, Dakota, and Emelia; extended family Karen Taylor and Jennifer Katsirubas and his dear friend, Marie. He also leaves behind many extended family members in Ireland and friends who will miss him dearly.

The family would be remiss if they did not express their profound gratitude to the Department of Veterans Affairs, whose care and support meant so much to Jimmy throughout his final years. They are especially thankful for his dedicated home health team, Nicole and Brandi, whose compassion, kindness, and friendship enriched Jimmy’s life in countless ways. The family also wishes to recognize the extraordinary physicians, nurses, chaplains, and staff of the West Roxbury VA Medical Intensive Care Unit. The empathy, dignity, and unwavering support they provided to both Jimmy and his loved ones during his final days were nothing short of remarkable. Their care ensured that Jimmy’s wishes were honored and that he spent his final moments surrounded by comfort, respect, and love. To Jimmy’s family, they will forever be remembered as true angels in healthcare.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours on Sunday, June 28th from 3-5pm at McMaster Funeral Home, 86 Franklin St. (Rt. 37), Braintree. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, June 29th at 10:30am at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 573 Washington St, Newton. Interment Newton Cemetery, Newton.
