Welcome to the memorial page for

Margaret V. (Connolly) Wilbur

November 25, 1927 ~ May 4, 2016 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Margaret V. (Connolly) Wilbur, formerly of Braintree, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2016 after a long illness.  She was 88 years old.

Margaret was the daughter of John and Katherine Connolly and was raised in Mission Hill with her three siblings by her father after her mother passed away at an early age.  She was pre-deceased in 2010 by her loving and devoted husband of over 60 years, Calvin H. Wilbur, Jr.

Margaret was the cherished mother of Calvin Wilbur III and his wife Susan of Hingham, John Wilbur and his wife Nancy of Amherst, NH and Catherine Horgan and her husband Neal of Scituate.  She was the proud and adoring grandmother of Meaghan, Bryan and Brendan Wilbur, John, Michael and Thomas Wilbur and Kaitlyn and Devon Horgan.  She had recently welcomed her first great-grandchild, Calvin H. Wilbur of Amherst, NH.

Margaret devoted herself to her family and took great joy in the simple things that made for a happy home.  A talented seamstress, she enjoyed sewing clothes for her children and they were frequently treated to new holiday outfits lovingly created by Mom.  Her warm chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven were legendary and every fall the harvest from Dad’s backyard garden was hand ground to make her special green tomato relish and to bake her delicious zucchini bread.   Although she herself was terrified on the water, she steeled herself and joined her family for boating outings because she knew how much Dad and her three children loved it. Travelling through Hull Gut to reach George’s Island for a picnic and exploration of the old fort was a favorite Wilbur excursion.  Every summer she hosted an extended family gathering which is still recalled fondly by many and often featured fresh flounder caught from the boat. She succeeded in creating many happy memories for her family while also working part-time outside of her home in food services at Archbishop Williams High School, Pewter Pot Restaurant and the National Fire Protection Association.  She supported and encouraged her children with all of their activities and was proud that each one received a college education, an opportunity that she had not been afforded as a young woman.  She loved poetry, quiet prayer and music.  Her ability to recall the lyrics to a vast selection of songs was remarkable; she found much joy in singing.

Margaret’s legacy of kindness to everyone she knew will be forever remembered.  She never wavered in her concern for others and always, always had a compliment or a positive and encouraging word to offer.  Her caring and gentle presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Friends and relatives are asked to remember Margaret in their prayers and for those that desire, donations in her memory may be made to the Norwell VNA and Hospice for the Pat Roche Hospice Home 86 Turkey Hill Lane, Hingham, MA 02043, the Alzheimer’s Association 480 Pleasant St, Watertown, MA 02472 or to the charity of their choice.

The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sunrise Assisted Living in Cohasset, Bridges by Epoch in Hingham and the Pat Roche Hospice Home in Hingham for their tender care, concern and support.  We are forever grateful to you, as was she. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass in St. Francis of Assisi Church 850 Washington St. Braintree, Monday May 9 at 10:30 AM. Interment private.
